Value Descriptions

SHARED EMPLOYEE EXPECTATIONS

People-development is the best investment that an organization can make. Employees are the life-blood of an organization and the right human resource, talent acquisition, and professional development strategy can bolster an organization’s impact by strengthening the individuals who create progress. I am a teacher at heart and development is my passion. I have always sought opportunities that allowed me to coach others and provide them with the guidance to secure a prosperous future via education. I enjoy improving the lives of others. This personal and professional mission has provided me with the ability to establish trust and rapport with my peers and supervisors.

COLLABORATION

To accomplish great results, it is crucial to collect diverse perspectives and collaborate with a dynamic team. I enjoy developing teams and collaborating with different departments in order to improve the lives of those in our organization. I believe that this position will feed my passion for helping others grow through education. It’s important to also gather a strong network of resources and partners to better affect change and find opportunities to share resources and ideas,

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION

I have always wanted the opportunity to help others succeed. My education and career with has given my life meaning, provided me with opportunities, and been paramount in shaping the very fabric of who I am. I believe that the Program Officer position will feed my passion for helping underrepresented groups find these same educational opportunities.

Creating large-scale change is never easy. It is increasingly difficult when working with diverse populations who face a wide range of social and economic obstacles. However, these populations are those who need educational access the most. For the last seven years, I have seen some of the struggles occurring in our most vulnerable groups. Problems such as crime, access to education, health issues, housing, and equity for those who are disadvantaged. The more I see, the more I want to help to solve these problems, to create a different system that provides upward mobility.

Providing people with opportunity is why I have chosen my career path in education. The multiple positions I have held in my career in education have provided me with the opportunity to work with a sundry of students and staff who vary in race, ethnicity, educational background, and socio-economical cultures. Creating opportunities for those who need it most is what gets me out of bed in the morning.

OPTIMISM

My passion is helping others to improve and secure opportunities, growth, and prosperity. I find that the mission of an organization or department is an important source of motivation and allows me to apply my vigor for change and making a positive impact.

I have always been able to use vision as a means of strategy. I take pride in growing a program from the ground up. I enjoy the challenge of turning ideas into reality through strategic systems and processes. The right vision, resources, and strategy is what drives programmatic success, which drives the mission of the organization. My professional success has been the result of the right vision, structure, and grit to exceed expectations.  My passion as a professional is to make an impact. I thrive in working with diverse groups and departments to develop and support positive change. Reaching outcomes is a necessity, but establishing a new ceiling for success is what makes it a privilege to work in higher education. I am confident in my ability to support the Foundation’s objectives to increase reach, inclusiveness, and desired outcomes. I believe that every individual at heart has a potential for greatness.

INNOVATION

I have always questioned things. I enjoy thinking differently and using my imagination in order to compliment my professional skills. Creative thinking has always provided me with the ability to spearhead development. My eclectic background has provided me with a unique combination of talent. One of my most useful leadership qualities is my ability to develop the strengths of individuals in a team to create complex initiatives and solutions.

OPERATING FROM CURIOSITY

Curiosity has been one of the most crucial tools to my success as a manager. Questioning procedure, learning about others, and asking, ‘why not?’ Over, ‘why?’ Has provided me with innovative ideas, connections with others, and strong professional judgement. I have often used my curiosity to challenge the status quo.

My experience as Academic Dean provided me with the unique outside curiosity to question common procedure and construct new ideas for accomplishing the same objective more efficiently. Curiosity has also complimented my interpersonal skills. Some might call me a people person; I am naturally curious about others. This has been one of the most useful aspects of my curiosity: People are the most important resources for creating change.

SET THE HIGHEST STANDARDS

Employee-first leadership also allows me to hold my employees to high standards. My tenacious work ethic, service attitude, and hands-on approach provide me with the respect of my colleagues and employees. I have a strong ability to inspire others in their efforts and creativity via my experience as an instructor in a variety of challenging educational settings. I possess a Kai Zen philosophy of continuous improvement and believe that good can always be better. I am able to have critical conversations when improvement is necessary, but prefer to proactively solve problems by providing structure, clear expectations, thorough instructions, necessary resources, and support whenever necessary in order to ensure others are set up for success. I believe that mistakes and failure can be avoided through strategic planning. However, I also think it’s important to look at mistakes and discrepancies as learning opportunities for improvement and growth.

IMPACT ON A LARGE SCALE

I enjoy creating change on a large scale and prefer to solve problems systematically. I believe in proactive problem-solving in order to resolve small issues before they turn into more substantial problems. As a manager, I believe that it’s important to consider an individual’s problem as a possible reflection of a larger population who may face the same issue, which may not have surfaced. Ensuring that employee issues are solved systematically at the programmatic level will yield proactive solutions to others experiencing the same problem in the future. My emotional intelligence is bolstered by my ability to think critically and creatively to problem solve, develop ideas, and identify opportunities for improvement and innovation.

LEAD FROM BEHIND

As a leader, I find it important to stay connected to the challenges, tasks, and resources of my employees. Making an effort to better understand the multiple requirements at each level of operation can provide perspective on how to create organizational improvement. I enjoy opportunities to roll up my sleeves to do what’s necessary to better inform my perspective as a manager. Diving into the weeds can provide crucial information and understanding on how to improve systems that may function more efficiently with the right understanding, design, and implementation. The devil is in the details. The difference between average and excellence is in attention to detail, that extra effort to go above and beyond the status quo is often what can create the difference between success and failure.

CONVICTION FOR RESULTS

I am an independent thinker. I often think creatively and have noticed that my approach to problems is often very different than my colleagues and employees. I enjoy collaboration, but will also passionately argue the merits of my ideas if I believe in their merit. I look for common ground when necessary, but am comfortable asserting authority and resolve in order to accomplish my vision for success.

OUTCOMES-BASED MEASURING STICK

My passion is helping others to improve and secure opportunities, growth, and prosperity. I find that the mission of an organization or department is an important source of motivation and allows me to apply my vigor for change and making a positive impact. In reading about this position, I was astounded at how fitting it was to my experience, skills, and passion. Professional development and creating personal growth for my employees was one of the most meaningful parts of my position.

I am a lifelong learner. Growth motivates me above all else—creating growth in others, self-improvement, and growing my impact on the mission of a worthy organization. I’ve always felt that my employee/student-first philosophy served me well regardless of the situation. Developing leadership skills of my department chairs, program chairs, administrators, and faculty provided our campus with the organizational improvements to exceed educational outcomes and improve student and employee satisfaction. I enjoy using my lead-from-behind style to foster the strengths, diversity, and creative problem solving of a team to accomplish a shared mission.
